Since 1963, we’ve designed thousands of log and timber frame projects. Not only can our team design log, timber frame, panelized or hybrid homes, but we have also crafted commercial structures, barns, workshops, custom garages, pool houses, additions and more. Whatever type of project you desire, we’re here to work with you and make it happen.
Although some customers choose already existing plans with slight modifications, most of our clients want something more distinct and will simply use our plans or project photos as inspiration for their own custom home. We also have many clients who have begun working with their own architect or design professional, and we’re happy to collaborate with them as well.
In most cases the design phase begins with initial sketches worked out by either you and your builder, your architect or with your project manager and one of our in-house designers. Our Design Studio, using ARCHICAD® software, begins by converting these sketches into 1/4″ scale computer generated drawings of your floor plans and elevations, creating the preliminary set of drawings.
The preliminary drawings are sent to you along with an isometric drawing of your project for approval. If changes are needed, they are red-lined and re-submitted to our Design Studio for revisions. The revisions are made and once again the drawings will be sent to you for approval.
Upon approval of the final floor plan design, more drawings, showing the foundation plan and details, are created. For our timber frame projects, our Design Studio, using Cadwork® software, also creates a computer generated 3-D model of the timber frame design. From this 3-D timber frame model the software then enables us to extract a 2-D timber frame drawing and the code that can be fed into our Hundegger® automated joinery machine.
This information is used by our production team to fabricate the frame for your timber frame home. The end result is an accurately cut timber frame and a comprehensive set of final drawings, which are used to fabricate your timber frame and your contractor to build your new home.
Some of these could include the ability to choose your site, preparing for a growing family or eventual retirement, a floor plan that suits your lifestyle or having more control over utilities and their environmental impact. Whatever your motivation, our in-house Design Studio will work with you to incorporate all your wants and needs into the plans for your project.
Our decades of timber frame, log and panelized design experience has taught us that the success of a project relies on our ability to incorporate sound engineering and the latest technology with fine craftsmanship and excellent communication. Through in-person and virtual site visits and discussions about your personal preferences, we will guide you through the process. Once the technical requirements and style of your home have been established, we will guide you through choosing the most functional and aesthetically pleasing structural components for your project.

Our team recognizes this and fully embraces the idea that a home should be a true reflection of the people who live there. That is why every home we design, manufacture, ship and help construct is custom. Although some customers choose already existing plans with slight modifications, many customers use the plans they see on our website as inspiration for their own home. Our in-house design studio has developed thousands of timber frame, log, panelized and hybrid projects and plans. Our expertise doesn’t end with residential design. We also have crafted commercial structures, barns, workshops, garages, pool houses, and additions. Whatever type of project you desire, we’re there to work with you, your designer or your architect to make sure the process is as smooth as possible, and your space is just as you pictured…or better!
