Construction Process

Our Process

Building a home requires careful collaboration from everyone involved–owners, manufacturers, and craftsmen alike.

To begin planning your dream home, we recommend calling us to discuss your ideas. At this stage, we will ask you questions to better understand your vision and needs and will also go over your timeline and budget, which will help determine the next steps.

Of course, at any point during the process, we welcome you to visit our facilities to get to know us and see how we operate. And, if geographically feasible, one of our project managers would be happy to meet with you at your land.

Clients often come to us with an idea or concept in mind, and they may even have drawings they’ve sketched themselves. Others start with an inspiration plan from our existing portfolio, which includes hundreds of photos and floor plans. We also have worked with numerous clients who have engaged an architect. No matter what category you fall into, our project managers and in-house design team will work with you to move your project to the next phase where you will enter a design agreement and make a design deposit so they can develop your floor plans. During this stage, you will also select the materials that will be included with your home. While our building systems each have “typical” package components, each project is unique and you may decide that certain materials or services are or are not needed to complete your home. For clients looking for a higher level of customization, we can often accommodate and provide additional services and materials.

After finalizing your design you will submit a production deposit, along with a signed contract securing your package price and your project will be scheduled for production with our skilled craftsmen. For timber frame projects, we will prepare the files in our design software to coordinate with our CNC machines that will precisely cut your structural components. After the structural components are run through our CNC machines, our craftsmen begin on the hand-finishing of your timber frame.

Your materials package will be delivered to your site within 90-120 days. In some cases, we can accelerate this timeline. At this point, it is important to get your builder involved, if we have not already connected.

A qualified local home builder or general contractor of your choosing will oversee the installation of your home. Each project is unique, and we can offer varying levels of support depending on your builder’s experience and comfort level with timber, log or panelized construction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our family of brands has grown over the years! It all started in 1963 with Vermont Log Buildings, which later became Real Log Homes, one of the most well-known log home brands in the industry. A decade later Timberpeg was launched to offer true mortise-and-tenon style timber frame construction to the North American market after nearly 100 years. In 2012, WHS founded American Post & Beam to offer a lighter style of post & beam framing, and in 2021 WHS acquired our local friendly competitor Davis Frame Company. Timberpeg’s modern timber framing system offers the flexibility and sophistication to seamlessly integrate into client’s architect designed plans and achieve the the highest level of custom home design. American Post & Beam offers a lighter style of hybrid post & beam construction yielding contemporary interiors with the character of exposed heavy timber. Davis Frame Company delivers traditional timber framed great rooms and homes which are often integrated with our proprietary BuildPak™ panelized wall and pre-cut conventional building component system. Real Log Homes, our flagship brand.

We bring together the strengths and distinctive building systems of our family of brands including Timberpeg, Real Log Homes, Davis Frame Company, American Post & Beam and Jamaica Cottage Shop to provide clients with a single source to explore a broad range of character-rich building styles. Our homes aren’t just customizable; they are fully custom expressions of the lives our customers live.

Across our family of brands, we offer many building systems which can be combined to achieve our client’s aesthetic, architectural, and budgetary goals, whether it is timber frame, post and beam, panelized, log, or a combination. Learn more about our building systems on our Building Systems Page.

Our company designs and fabricates complete structural building envelope packages. Each project is unique and can include a wide range of components and services, which means the package cost can vary quite a bit, but typically ranges between $100 and $175 per square foot and represents between a quarter and a third of the overall cost of construction.

Ultimately, the cost to build our homes tends to follow regional “turnkey” price trends for similarly appointed high quality custom homes. Generally starting at $400 per square foot, our client’s preferences and priorities, regional code requirements, and project complexities are driving factors of the overall building cost.

Our homes are built throughout North America and sometimes even overseas.

Timber frame is a classification of post and beam construction consisting of traditional wooden joinery, known as mortise-and-tenon, secured by wooden pegs. There are timber frame building methods, such as the Bent system where posts span, unbroken, from sill to eave or ridge and are erected in walls. (Bents run perpendicular to the ridge of the roof, while walls run parallel to the ridge). Post and beam home construction is a framework based solely on vertical and horizontal pieces: the posts and the beams. Post and beam homes are constructed in layers, with each floor built independently from the others. Typically, the posts and the beams are joined together by metal brackets.
